In a facilitated workshop, participants will the Adaptation Workbook structured decision-support process to intentionally integrate climate change considerations into conservation efforts on two TNC preserves (Green Hills and Surry Mountain). Using this approach, the project team will:
- Outline current baseline conditions, management goals, and values relevant to each preserve.
- Consider climate change impacts on the preserves, outline climate vulnerabilities, and describe how those vulnerabilities might influence key characteristics of forested ecosystems and wildlife habitats.
- Identify potential management adaptation actions/interventions that could be taken in response to climate pressures over time.
- Identify monitoring a monitoring plan to assess the effectiveness of adaptation actions/interventions.
- Provide a platform for engagement on the topic of climate change with preserve partners.
Meeting dates
- Session 1: Thursday, February 2nd, 1:00-4:00pm ET (see calendar invite)
- Session 2: Thursday, February 9th, 1:00-4:00pm ET (see calendar invite)
- Session 3: Thursday, February 16th, 1:00-4:00pm ET (see calendar invite)
Prior to the Workshop
- Fill out Step 1 worksheet and identify 1-2 management goals (broad, conceptual) and 1-3 specific management objectives (more specific, measurable) for each goal for the project area.
Complete and submit the Step 1 worksheet by 1/27/23 (the Friday before Session 1). - Provide location coordinates and/or a map of the project area to facilitators, optional - send photos of the project area.
- Locate information that you have about current site conditions (tree species composition, canopy cover, soils, etc.) so that it’s handy during the workshop.
- Review information on climate change impacts to ecosystem types and tree species, take notes and bring ideas related to site-level impacts to session 1 (we recommend reserving 1-2 hours to review these materials): www.forestadaptation.org/ne-assessment
- Review additional resources as needed (noted below).
- Skim the Forest Adaptation Strategies and Approaches and Adaptation Workbook to understand the workshop's conceptual framework.
