Description

The Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science and USDA Northern Forests Climate Hub are offering an online Adaptation Planning and Practices (APPo) training for forest and natural resource managers in 2023. This opportunity provides hands-on training to consider climate change impacts and identify adaptation actions for a range of natural ecosystems, resource areas, and cultural perspectives.

Participants will receive coaching and feedback while using the online version of the Adaptation Workbook to develop their own real-world climate adaptation project. Each week, participants will join a 1-hour Monday lecture and a corresponding 1-hour discussion section organized based on project topic areas.

As part of this eight-week training, all participants will receive coaching and feedback from NIACS staff in structured weekly web-based lectures and group discussion meetings. NIACS technical support and coaching are available to all training participants. The training consists of seven weekly web sessions and three discussion sessions, with one break-week and independent work time occurring between sessions. There are no registration fees thanks to the support of the US Forest Service and the USDA Northern Forests Climate Hub

Through this training, participants will be able to:

  • Identify locally-important climate change impacts, challenges, and opportunities
  • Develop specific actions to adapt forests to changing conditions
  • Use the Adaptation Workbook to create their own “climate-informed” projects
  • Better communication with stakeholders about key climate change impacts, challenges, and opportunities
  • Access post-training support from NIACS staff during project planning and implementation

The training is scheduled to run weekly between March 20, 2023 - May 10, 2023. A detailed agenda will be sent to those accepted.

Registration process

We ask participants to bring real-world projects of their very own to use as examples in the training.

Ideally, the project is relevant to your work, such as a management plan or another effort that you're currently working on. During the training, we'll help you consider how climate change could affect your project area, your ability to achieve your goals, and support your assessment of available adaptation options. At the end of the training, you’ll have a custom-built adaptation plan that’s ready to implement!

After registration, we will evaluate applications to ensure that participants have a project appropriate for the training. To register, please fill out the form below and upload a completed Step 1 worksheet.
